**Chappell Roan Faced a Major Wardrobe Malfunction Moments Before Her SNL Performance** Chappell Roan’s *Saturday Night Live* debut came with a little unexpected drama backstage. Just moments before stepping on stage, the singer experienced a major wardrobe malfunction that nearly derailed her performance. Roan, known for her bold style and theatrical presence, managed to keep her cool and pull it together just in time for the show. Despite the last-minute hiccup, she delivered a memorable performance, proving that nothing — not even a fashion mishap — could stop her from shining on the iconic *SNL* stage. The incident serves as a reminder that live television comes with its share of surprises, but Roan handled it like a pro.

Chappell Roan’s SNL Performance Nearly Derailed by Wardrobe Malfunction

Chappell Roan’s Saturday Night Live debut in November almost hit a snag due to a major wardrobe mishap just moments before her performance.

In a recent interview with Canadian journalist Nardwuar, shared on Dec. 15, Roan, 26, revealed that her sparkling, jewel-adorned white gown ripped moments before taking the stage. “It ripped all the way down the back right before I walked on stage,” the Pink Pony Club singer said. “I had to have SNL’s in-house seamstress … I was sewn into the dress because it ripped all the way down.”

The singer, known for her bold and theatrical fashion choices, laughed when asked about post-performance outfit care. “They smell crazy, yeah. I don’t know if I clean it, I think I just put it in a bag and put it back on the rack,” Roan admitted.

Roan paired the gown with her signature dramatic red curls and bold drag-inspired makeup, complete with jeweled spider-themed accessories — a subtle nod to Halloween, which had just passed.

For her second performance of the night, Roan debuted her new country-inspired track The Giver in a pink-and-white gingham bralette with matching shorts, cowboy boots, and a tie. Her band also embraced the country theme with complementary looks.

Roan has earned widespread praise for her daring and imaginative style, which takes cues from drag, theater, and vintage aesthetics. Earlier this year, she performed at New York’s Governors Ball dressed as a green-painted Statue of Liberty.

Her SNL promo look, a striking burlesque-inspired costume designed by Project Runway alum Gunnar Deatherage, also turned heads. Featuring dragonfly wings and an elaborate headpiece, the outfit drew inspiration from early 1900s burlesque dancers.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Deatherage revealed that the look was originally planned for a music festival performance but evolved as its complexity grew. “It became clear this look needed to be seen in a more stationary moment,” he said. “We didn’t want to hinder Chappell’s ability to create magic on stage.”

Whether it’s overcoming last-minute malfunctions or showcasing extravagant designs, Chappell Roan’s SNL debut proved her flair for blending artistry and performance.
