"Bluey" is Coming to the Big Screen in 2027: What to Know
For the first time, Bluey is headed to theaters.
The Walt Disney Company announced on Tuesday that it is collaborating with BBC Studios to bring the beloved animated series to the big screen in a new film slated for a 2027 release. The movie will follow the adventures of the popular blue heeler pup Bluey and her younger sister, Bingo, as part of their Australian dog family. The show, which originally debuted in Australia, gained global popularity after being picked up by Disney+.
According to Nielsen reports, Bluey was the most-watched children’s show in both 2023 and 2024 across all platforms. Series creator Joe Brumm will write and direct the film, promising it will “continue the adventures” of Bluey and Bingo.
“I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together,” Brumm said in a Disney press release.
The Peabody and Emmy Award-winning series is available in over 140 countries and has become Disney+’s most-watched global show of the year.
In April, the show released a widely discussed special titled The Sign. Brumm said that working on the longer episode format inspired the leap to a feature film: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that.”
The Bluey special, The Sign, sparked conversation among fans as it revolved around a “For Sale” sign in front of the Heeler family home, suggesting a significant move for the family due to Bandit’s new job. The storyline struck an emotional chord with viewers as Bluey and her mom, Chilli, struggled to cope with the looming change.
Now, with a feature film on the horizon, Bluey fans can look forward to a new, larger-than-life adventure featuring the Heeler family.
