Burt, Beloved Star of Crocodile Dundee, Passes Away at Over 90
Burt, the iconic saltwater crocodile who captivated audiences in the 1986 Australian classic Crocodile Dundee, has died at the remarkable age of at least 90.
The news of Burt’s passing was announced by Crocosaurus Cove, the Australian reptile park where the legendary croc spent his final years.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Burt, the iconic Saltwater crocodile and star of the Australian classic Crocodile Dundee,” Crocosaurus Cove shared on Instagram. “Burt passed away peacefully over the weekend, estimated to be over 90 years old, marking the end of an incredible era.”
Burt’s Hollywood fame began with his appearance in Crocodile Dundee, which starred Paul Hogan as a fearless Australian crocodile hunter navigating a culture clash in New York City. The film became a global phenomenon, ranking among Australia’s highest-grossing movies and spawning two sequels: Crocodile Dundee II and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles.
A Legacy of Strength and Resilience
Burt’s journey to stardom began in the 1980s when he was captured in the Reynolds River region. His commanding presence and memorable personality made him a natural ambassador for Australia’s unique wildlife, symbolizing the rugged beauty and awe-inspiring nature of the country.
In 2008, Burt found a home at Crocosaurus Cove, where he became a key figure in crocodile education and a popular attraction for visitors worldwide. Known for his fiery independence, Burt earned the title of a “confirmed bachelor” after showing little interest in companionship during his earlier years at a crocodile farm.
Despite his fierce demeanor, Burt left a lasting impression on his caretakers and the thousands of visitors who came to marvel at his immense size and powerful presence—especially during his legendary feeding sessions.
Honoring Burt’s Legacy
The team at Crocosaurus Cove expressed their gratitude to everyone who celebrated Burt’s life over the years, stating, “Burt was truly one of a kind. He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures.”
To honor Burt’s extraordinary legacy, Crocosaurus Cove plans to install a commemorative sign at the park, celebrating his remarkable life and the joy he brought to countless visitors.
Burt’s passing marks the end of an era, but his impact on wildlife conservation and his role as an emblem of Australia’s wild heart will not be forgotten.
