Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Retirement Following Gabba Test; Rohit Sharma Pays Tribute
India’s premier off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday after the conclusion of the Brisbane Test against Australia. The 38-year-old made the emotional announcement during a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma, shortly after the match ended in a draw.
Rohit, visibly emotional, hailed Ashwin as one of India’s greatest “match-winners” and expressed his deep admiration for the veteran spinner's contributions to Indian cricket.
Ashwin leaves the game as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 537 scalps to his name. He also holds the record as the leading wicket-taker in the history of the ICC World Test Championship, with 195 wickets across three editions.
Rohit Reveals the Decision
Speaking about Ashwin’s retirement, Rohit shared that he first learned of the decision upon arriving in Perth before the Adelaide Test. Despite Ashwin’s firm resolve, Rohit persuaded him to stay on for the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, where Ashwin played his final match.
“He was very sure about his decision. He felt, ‘If I’m not needed in the series, I’m better off saying goodbye to the game.’ While we respected his choice, we wanted him to play at least the Adelaide Test. I’m glad he agreed,” said Rohit.
An Illustrious Career
Ashwin’s career is studded with remarkable achievements. He was the fastest bowler to reach milestones like 250, 300, and 350 Test wickets and the second-fastest to claim 500 wickets, achieving the feat in just 98 matches. He also boasts 37 five-wicket hauls in Tests, second only to Muttiah Muralitharan's 67.
Known for his versatility and cricketing intellect, Ashwin was instrumental in India’s success across formats. From his vital contributions in home Tests to his performances abroad, he consistently delivered under pressure.
Rohit’s Tribute
Reflecting on their journey together, Rohit praised Ashwin’s legacy and recalled their early days playing under-17 cricket.
“He’s a true match-winner, someone we always turned to in moments of crisis. His records speak for themselves, but more importantly, he’s been a dedicated servant of Indian cricket. He’s left no stone unturned in his pursuit of excellence,” Rohit added.
Ashwin’s retirement came as a surprise to many, given his continued effectiveness. His final outing in Adelaide saw him take one wicket, concluding a career spanning 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, with 765 wickets across formats.
The Legacy of R. Ashwin
Ashwin’s accolades include the most Player of the Series awards in Test cricket (11) and a pivotal role in India’s historic achievements, such as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumphs. His departure marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy that future generations of cricketers will look up to.
Ashwin’s wit and dedication, as highlighted by Rohit, will remain a cherished part of Indian cricket’s history. As he steps away from the field, fans and teammates alike celebrate a career defined by brilliance, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the game.
