Kamaka Air Plane Crash Near Honolulu Airport Claims Two Lives

Kamaka Air CEO David Hinderland issued a statement following the tragic cargo plane crash near Daniel K. Inouye International Airport:

"We are not releasing the names of the pilots until family members have had a chance to process this tragedy. We hope the media will extend the same consideration.

In the meantime, we are cooperating fully with the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration as they investigate the accident. We will share confirmed information with the media as it becomes available over the coming hours and days.

At this time, we ask for patience as we prioritize gathering accurate information, not only to provide clarity about what happened but to ensure it is handled with sensitivity."

HONOLULU (Island News): The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) confirmed a Kamaka Air cargo plane crash near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, resulting in two fatalities.

Witnesses reported heavy black smoke near the makai side of the H-1 Freeway following the crash.

The Honolulu Emergency Operations Center has been partially activated to address the incident, and the city’s Department of Emergency Management is coordinating efforts with the Honolulu Fire Department and Honolulu Police Department.

While Ualena, Aolele, and Paiea Streets near the airport were initially closed, they have since reopened.


Governor Josh Green’s Statement
"Shortly after 3:00 PM this afternoon, HDOT responded to a plane crash into an unoccupied building on Ualena Street.

All airport facilities remain operational, though nearby roads were temporarily closed. HDOT is assisting airport employees and Terminal 3 occupants to ensure safe transportation away from areas affected by the crash.

Jaime’s and my hearts go out to the pilot, passenger, and their families, as well as to all who have experienced this traumatic event. Services are available for those in need of support; please call 2-1-1, Aloha United Way, for assistance. HDOT will provide full support to federal officials as they investigate the incident, though determining the cause may take time."


Mayor Rick Blangiardi’s Statement
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash on Oʻahu this afternoon that claimed the lives of two Kamaka Air employees. On behalf of the City and County of Honolulu, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those we lost.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the risks and dedication of those who ensure Hawai‘i’s essential goods are delivered. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted during this difficult time.

We are grateful for the swift response of first responders at the scene and stand ready to support Kamaka Air and all those affected."
